There you are in perfectly warm weather, which finds its way to you by floating on a breeze off the water. As you dig your feet an inch deeper into the soft, sugar textured beach sand, you suddenly become acutely aware of the rhythmic sound of the waves as they fold over themselves, lapping onto the shore. Without even realizing it, you close your eyes and begin to take notice of the warmth on your face as the sun does its job. Everything else in life just completely faded away. This moment. This time in space, is an eye closer.
Eye closer moments are everywhere, all the time. Instances where absolute presence, and true contentedness meet. It can be the first bite of a garden-fresh tomato, your favorite song being played live in concert, lying on the grass after a long fought soccer game, your first shower after being out in the wilds for several days or longer, a nod of reassurance from someone you wouldn’t expect, a back-float in a mountain lake, a popsicle on a hot day, an infant asleep on your chest, a hug when you need it most, lying in bed a few minutes longer just because you’re blissfully comfortable, warm wind on your face, dancing like you mean it, a perfect cappuccino, an amazing pastry, the best taco of your life…
Even in the worst of times the very best gems of life will present themselves if we pay close enough attention. Joy is generated from within and we get to decide how much or little of it we allow to rise to the surface each day.
If it’s true that, It’s the little things in life, it’s equally true that misery loves company. The choice is there. Go septic with discontent and fight against the potential joy in each passing day of life as if it were your sworn enemy, or choose to acknowledge the eye closer moments as they happen, rather than letting them pass by. There’s a reason why the caged bird sings.
